As I was preparing to read a new book, I found myself staging the room for what I anticipated would be a terror-filled read. I put on my most comfortable clothes (typically yoga pants and a t-shirt), closed the curtains to make the room pitch black, and I grabbed my favorite blanket so I could bundle up just in case I got a chill of fear. I also made sure I had a piping hot cup of coffee ready and waiting for me to sip on.
I don’t know what made me think about this, but it struck me that the various things I do before I start reading a new book or watching a movie or television show might be just a bit odd. The atmosphere I create totally depends on the genre. For horror, suspense, action, or thrillers I always make sure the room is as I described above. I like it practically pitch black – the darkness increases the fear factor.
Chick Lit, romance, or romantic comedies means the curtains are open to allow in as much sunshine as possible. This creates a light atmosphere. I might drink coffee or my favorite cold beverage, but the blanket is nowhere to be found. Also, I’m typically sitting in a corner on the couch or in the recliner with my knees drawn up and I’m fully dressed and made up as if my girlfriends and I were going to hang out. For business, self-help, or inspirational reading I am almost always sitting at my desk or at the kitchen table. How strange is that?
I’ve been told that I can be a little weird at times, but I just thought this was too funny! I imagine that I am not the only one who does this who has certain reading styles. Everyone probably has a way they like to read or watch a movie but because it’s like second nature they don’t give it much thought.
