What is Your Reading Style?

Woman Reading In A Book My Book Habit 1000 x 688

As I was preparing to read a new book, I found myself staging the room for what I anticipated would be a terror-filled read. I put on my most comfortable clothes (typically yoga pants and a t-shirt), closed the curtains to make the room pitch black, and I grabbed my favorite blanket so I could bundle up just in case I got a chill of fear. I also made sure I had a piping hot cup of coffee ready and waiting for me to sip on.

I don’t know what made me think about this, but it struck me that the various things I do before I start reading a new book or watching a movie or television show might be just a bit odd. The atmosphere I create totally depends on the genre. For horror, suspense, action, or thrillers I always make sure the room is as I described above. I like it practically pitch black – the darkness increases the fear factor.

Woman Reading in ChairChick Lit, romance, or romantic comedies means the curtains are open to allow in as much sunshine as possible. This creates a light atmosphere. I might drink coffee or my favorite cold beverage, but the blanket is nowhere to be found. Also, I’m typically sitting in a corner on the couch or in the recliner with my knees drawn up and I’m fully dressed and made up as if my girlfriends and I were going to hang out. For business, self-help, or inspirational reading I am almost always sitting at my desk or at the kitchen table. How strange is that?

I’ve been told that I can be a little weird at times, but I just thought this was too funny! I imagine that I am not the only one who does this who has certain reading styles. Everyone probably has a way they like to read or watch a movie but because it’s like second nature they don’t give it much thought.

What about you? What’s your reading style? How do you set the stage before you get comfortable with a new book or movie? I’d love to know! Tell me about it in the comments section.Sunday Post

When I was married I used to be the same way. Now, since it’s just me and my mom I read practically everywhere too, but my favorite place totally depends upon the type of the book I am reading. I know, it’s totally strange.

I don’t usually do any prep at all for reading except for trying to reduce any noise that might be distracting. I tend to read on the go or while in bed. The ideal reading scenario for me would be sitting in the reclining chair in my living room with a blanket and something warm to drink. In my house, it’s rarely quiet enough to read in there, though. Lovely post! 🙂

A reclining chair, blanket and a warm beverage sounds absolutely wonderful. My kind of reading spot. And thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. I really enjoyed writing this one.

I”m not sure how much prepping I do just because of time. But if I could pick the absolute perfect setting to read it would be the big comfy chair in my living room in yoga pants and fuzzy socks, snuggled up with a blanket and a cup of tea and a classical playlist in the background. In reality most of my reading is done hiding in the bathroom or in bed until my eyes refuse to stay open!

      Katherine,

Your desired setting is WONDERFUL! However, I totally understand hiding in the bathroom to read…LOL. While I do not have children, I used to have a situation where I was accused of keeping my nose in a book more than being in reality. Hahahaha…but hey, isn’t that why we now have book review blogs because we eat, breathe and sleep books?

      Thanks for stopping by!
